Answer:

  1. Replace y for y = 6x... 6x = -8x-14
  2. Get the x's on one side of the equal sign, and constants on the other; Add 8x to 6x... 14x = -14
  3. Divide by 14 to get x alone... x = -14/14 = -1
  4. The answer is x = -1
