Given square ABCD, what is the length of AD?

since it's a square, all sides are equal
therefore,
3x - 5 = x + 1
2x = 6
x = 3
sub x into AD, which is 3x-5
= 3(3) - 5
= 9 - 5
= 4
therefore AD is 4 units
