Both have trial courts at the lowest level to hear both civil and criminal cases.

state appeals courts are similar to federal courts of appeals in that parties that are dissatisfied with the ruling of a court can take their court to the appeals court to try and get a different outcome. They are both court systems having courts of appeals.
